Faoo 2011 Programs

  • FALL FISHING DAYS Saturday, Oct. 1, 8 & 15 from 8:30 a.m. – 10 a.m.  Catch and release fishing for youth ages 3 – 16; all equipment is provided.  No pre-registration is necessary.  Participants are guaranteed to fish for 30 minutes.  Fishing slots are allocated on a first come first serve basis. 
  • THE BIG SIT Sunday, October 9 from 8 – 10 a.m. and 4 – 6 p.m. Join the Audubon Society of Kalamazoo and birders from across North America that will be out sitting and watching, trying to record as many species of birds as possible.  Participants are encouraged to bring a chair and dress for the weather.   If you have them, bring your binoculars, scopes and field guides.  We will have some on hand for those without. Meet at the large white tent behind the Visitor Center at the starting time for a guided walk to the observation deck.   
  • FALL COLOR DISCOVERY HIKES Saturday, October 22 at 10:30 a.m. & 1:30 p.m. Take a gentle stroll with us and enjoy the beautiful fall season! Learn why trees change color in the fall, see a variety of tree species in their autumn splendor and learn how to identify some common Michigan species.  
  • OWL PROWL Saturday, October 22 at 7 p.m.  Join us to learn about the amazing owl!  Participants will learn how owls hear a mouse beneath the snow, how they capture their prey, and what their habitat requirements are.  We will take a walk through the woods to try and call in and see owls that live on the grounds of the fish hatchery.  The Visitor Center will be open shortly before and shortly after the program.  
  • FEATHERED FRIENDS SAFARI Saturday, October 22 at 9 a.m. The hatchery’s ponds are a great place to see ducks and other birds during migration.  Ducks are especially easy to identify for beginners.  Bring out whole family for this fun and exciting program!  Bring your binoculars, scopes and field guides if you have them.  We will have some on hand for those without.  
  • HATCHERY TOURS, SEPT. – OCT AND FIRST 3 WEEKENDS IN NOV. Weekdays: By special reservation only; Saturday; 10 & 11 a.m., 1, 2 & 3 p.m.; Sunday; 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. tours last approximately 30 minutes. 

Program Notes: Unless otherwise noted, programs are one hour in length, offered FREE of charge and open to all ages and skill levels. The walks are not strenuous and are approximately one mile or less. Be sure to dress warm and wear comfortable shoes. 

The Visitor Center is open to the public during the fall season (September, October and the first three weekends in November), Tuesday – Saturday from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Sundays from 12 noon to 4 p.m
